Munich Re Seminar on “Effective Management of Natural Catastrophe Losses: Contingency Planning in the Insurance Industry” was held in cooperation with the Association |

A two-day seminar on “Effective Management of Natural Catastrophe Losses: Contingency Planning in the Insurance Industry” prepared by Munich Re was held in cooperation with the Association on 5–6 June 2008, at Milli Reinsurance Company Conference Hall.
On the first day of the seminar, following the opening speech by Mr. Ahmet Genç, Director General of General Directorate of Insurance and welcome note by Mr. Hulusi Taşkıran, the President of the Association, sessions were held on general problems faced after natural catastrophes and emergency plans.
During the second day of the seminar, the analyses on the technical factors that influence natural catastrophes, the format of contingency plans and restoration of facilities were introduced by experts.
The seminar was attended by the high-level directors and technical experts from insurance companies. |

The Association participated to the CEA 2008 General Assembly |

On 12–14 June 2008, the Association participated to the CEA 2008 General Assembly held in Berlin, Germany.
On the first day of the General Assembly the Presidential Council/DG Conference was held. On 13 June 2008, the morning session was allocated to the CEA 2008 General Meeting. During the meeting, CEA budget and new CEA statute was approved. Within the framework of the new statute, new arrangements on CEA membership, membership dues, inspection and structure of the General Assembly were set up while new structures such as CEA Executive Board and CEA Strategic Board were formed. At the General Assembly, Tommy Persson, the Chief Executive of Swedish Insurance Association was unanimously elected as the new CEA President until June 2011 while Gérard de La Martinière, the former CEA President was appointed as the new Vice Chairman of CEA. During the meeting, studies carried out by CEA on Solvency II, climate change, motor insurance, IFRS IV and single market (competition, distribution channels, retail insurance products) were also discussed in detail.
At the afternoon session of the meeting, a conference on “Insurance Dialogue” was held. Following the meeting, German Insurance Association hosted a gala dinner at Charlottenburg Palace.

The Association participated to the certificate program on “The Law of the European Union and WTO” |

On 16–27 June 2008, the Association participated to the certificate program on “The Law of the European Union and WTO” held by IKV (Economic Development Foundation) in cooperation with Yeditepe University. The Association was represented at the program by Mr. Hüseyin Arslan, Legal Affairs Specialist. During the program, several classes on the constitutional law of the EU, free movement and internal market, free movement of persons and WTO (World Trade Organization) were held by the lecturers from the Law Faculty of Amsterdam University. The program was attended by the officials from public institutions, judicial bodies and sectoral organizations. |

On 23 June 2008, the Association participated to the panel sessions on “the decisions of Court of Appeal regarding the indemnity of the deprived family members of the drivers within the context of mandatory economic reliability policies” and “portfolio indemnity in favor of insurance agencies” held by the Insurance Law Commission of Istanbul Bar Association in Istanbul in cooperation with Turkish Insurance Law Association. The Association was represented at the panel by Mr. Hüseyin Arslan, Legal Affairs Specialist. During the panel, lecturers from Galatasaray and Istanbul Universities discussed about the topics in detail. |

The Association participated to the 81 st Session of the OECD Insurance and Private Pensions Committee |

On 26–27 June 2008 the Association participated to the 81st Session of the OECD Insurance and Private Pensions Committee at the OECD Headquarters in Paris. The Association was represented by Ms. Berna Ozsar Kumcu, EU and International Relations Specialist and Mr. Atilla Oksay, Head of Technical Unit. The officials from the Turkish Undersecretariat of Treasury also attended the sessions.
On the first day of the meeting, sessions on “insurance market monitoring”, “corporate governance”, “regulatory effectiveness and efficiency”, “financial education” and “pay-out phase policy options for private pensions and annuities” were held. During the sessions, delegates from OECD countries shared country-specific practices with the participants from other member countries.
On the second day of the meeting, sessions on “large-scale catastrophes”, “IPPC” (Insurance and Private Pensions Committee) and “the works on private pension and financial markets carried out by the OECD and other international bodies” were held. During the large-scale catastrophes session, topics such as risk awareness, global earthquake model and public-private partnership in disaster risk management were discussed and the Association shared information with the participants on earthquake risk in Turkey, the functioning of TCIP (Turkish Catastrophe Insurance Pool) and risk awareness activities carried out by the Turkish insurance sector.
During the two-day meeting, delegates from OECD members, several specialists and speakers attended the sessions. |
