ASSOCIATION & INTERNATIONAL AFFAIRS

ORGANIZATION FOR ECONOMIC CO-OPERATION AND DEVELOPMENT (OECD)

OECD, which is an international organization helping governments tackle the economic, social and governance challenges of a globalized economy, brings together the governments of countries committed to democracy and the market economy from around the world to support sustainable economic growth, boost employment, raise living standards, maintain financial stability, assist other countries' economic development and contribute to growth in world trade.

The Association regularly attends the bi-annual meetings of the OECD Insurance and Private Pensions Committee, follows global developments and prepares reports and analyses to be distributed to the Turkish insurance sector.

The Association also convened its second international conference, entitled “International Seminar on Awareness and Education relative to Risks and Insurance Issues” in cooperation with OECD on 13 April 2007, in Istanbul, Turkey.

The main objective of this seminar was to highlight the need for increased awareness and specific education on risks and insurance issues in both developed and developing countries. The seminar aimed at enhancing the responsiveness of governments, financial institutions and in particular insurance market players as well as consumers with regard to the importance of appropriate information disclosure and education on risks and insurance issues and to examine countries’ experience, progress and good practices in this area. High-level governmental officials from regulatory and supervisory authorities, industry experts and academics from OECD countries and non-OECD members’ economies attended the event.

WORLD BANK

The World Bank, which is a vital source of financial and technical assistance to developing countries around the world is made up of two unique development institutions owned by 185 member countries, the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (IBRD) and the International Development Association (IDA).

The World Bank’s mission includes global poverty reduction, improvement of living standards, social sector lending projects, debt relief and good governance. Reconstruction also remains an important focus of its work; given the natural disasters and post conflict rehabilitation needs that affect developing and transition economies.

The Association regularly exchanges information and cooperates with the World Bank Financial Sector Operations & Policy Department. In line with the priorities of the World Bank and the Turkish insurance market, the Association’s first international conference entitled “Global Conference on Insurance and Reinsurance for Natural Catastrophe Risk” was conducted in co-operation with the World Bank on 8-9 December 2005.

As natural disasters such as earthquakes and floods wreak severe consequences on individual lives, property and whole economies, the conference aimed at providing a platform to exchange views and develop best practices for managing, mitigating and spreading risk, as well as reducing countries’ exposures to catastrophe risk.
